Disability Advisory and Support Service and University of Manchester Assessment Centre

Equipment

How do I get equipment?

We recognise that some students may need additional equipment or technology to enable them to make the most of their learning experience.

If you need additional equipment or technology because of your disability, then register with us or book a Quick Query appointment as soon as you can, as it can take some time to get the support that you need in place.

What equipment can I get?

You will have an assessment of support after registering with the Disability Advisory and Support Service, and this may include access to equipment.

Please note that equipment is only provided if it’s approved through the assessment process.

Below are some of the types of equipment that disabled students have received.

  • Digital recorders to record lectures and seminars.

  • Magnification software for blind and visually impaired students.

  • Screen reading software for blind and visually impaired students.

  • Read back software to help with reading text from a computer or proof reading work.

  • Mind mapping software to help with structuring work.

  • Speech recognition software to enter text by speaking where using a keyboard would present difficulties.

  • Ergonomic equipment such as specialist chairs, desks, mice, and keyboards.

  • Video magnifiers for blind and visually impaired students.

  • Radio aids for D/deaf or hearing impaired students.

Is there any equipment that I can get now?

We have a range of software available on the University’s cluster computers (for example, those in the library, Learning Commons, and other University buildings).

If you are really struggling to access your course because you haven’t got equipment in place that you need, book a Quick Query appointment or get in touch with your Disability Adviser.
