Disability Advisory and Support Service

Mental health support

Enjoying good mental health and wellbeing helps us to deal with the stresses of everyday life.

Our Wellbeing initiative is designed to support you – whether you're a student or member of staff – in improving your mental and physical wellbeing. We want to encourage everyone to think about how you manage your own wellbeing, steps you can take to recognise and reduce stress, and how you can take time out to reflect, relax and find balance in your daily life.

Engaging with the Six Ways to Wellbeing is a great way to look after yourself, keep well and help you to realise our full potential. But sometimes life's stresses can and do bring us down, and you may need a bit more support.

Support for you

One in four of us will experience some sort of mental health problem in our lives, whether it is anxious overthinking of everyday life stresses or something more serious and long term.

We have a number of support services that both students and staff can access:

If you're worried about someone else

Is someone you know acting differently - do they seem low, worried or stressed? If so, help is available.

Whether it’s for you or someone you know, you can access confidential advice on the support and options available to you.

You can call the Disability Advisory and Support Service on +44 (0)161 275 7512, Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm, or email dass@manchester.ac.uk.

Nightline is a confidential listening and information service run for students by students; contact Nightline on +44 (0)161 275 3983. Lines are open 8pm – 8am during term time.

If you think someone is at risk of suicide or self-harm

Talk

Tell the person you are concerned. If they are not at immediate risk, encourage them to get help and consider helping them to make the initial contact. If you are still worried contact the Counselling Service.

Call

If you think someone is at immediate risk call 999 and ask for an ambulance. If you are on campus, call security on +44 (0)161 306 9966. Tell them an ambulance is on the way and give details of your location.

Reassure

Reassure the person that help is on the way and wait with them.

Take care

If you are upset by what has happened, talk to a friend or colleague, or contact the Counselling Service at +44 (0)161 275 2864 or email: counselling.service@manchester.ac.uk.

Report discrimination

At the University of Manchester, we believe that bullying, harassment, and discrimination is never ok. No-one on our campus or in our surrounding communities should be treated badly. We Get It is a joint campaign, organised by the University and the Students’ Union, in support of our zero tolerance approach to any form of bullying, harassment, and discrimination.

We are all responsible for ending bullying, harassment and discrimination in our community. Whether you’re a member of staff, a student, or a visitor to the University, we’re asking you to Think, Talk, Report and Get Support.
